When To Call
Signs You May Need Switchboard Upgrades
Not sure it is worth a call? These are the everyday signs worth mentioning — you do not need to diagnose anything yourself.
Older fuse carriers are often found with oversized fuse wire fitted after repeated blows, which defeats the protection the fuse was sized to provide. Rewiring a blown ceramic fuse is not legal - they must be upgraded to RCBOs.
What to do: send us a photo of the open board and we will tell you what you are looking at.
Many older boards have RCD protection on one or two circuits and none on the rest, so large parts of the installation are left without the protection modern homes rely on.
What to do: we will check which circuits are actually protected, not just whether a safety switch exists.
Melted insulation, discoloured busbars and charred terminals are signs of a connection that has been running hot - a fault that escalates rather than settles.
What to do: stop using the affected circuit and call us; this one should not wait.
Boards filled in over decades often end up with double-tapped breakers, shared terminals and additions squeezed in wherever there was room - none of it easy to isolate or service safely.
What to do: we will map what is actually in there before recommending a scope.
Roof leaks, weathered external walls and poorly sealed enclosures let moisture into the board, where it causes tripping, corrosion and intermittent faults.
What to do: tell us if it follows rain, and we will look for where the water is getting in.
A loose or arcing neutral connection can cause intermittent faults and unusual voltages on circuits that still appear to work - lights glowing oddly bright or dim is a common sign.
What to do: call promptly rather than waiting for it to become permanent.
